So on Tuesday night it was the GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards 2014. This is the time of year where GLAMOUR Magazine celebrates women (and one award for the men ;p) in all aspects of the public eye.
The categories for the GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards 2014 are:
UK Solo Artist, Fashion Designer, TV Personality, Film Actress, Presenter, Hero, Editor’s Special, Man of the Year, Entrepreneur, International TV Actress, Theatre Actress, Icon Award, UK TV Actress, Writer, Band, Accessories Designer, Breakthrough, Radio Personality, Film Maker, International Solo Artist, Comedy Actress, Columnist, Sportswoman and Outstanding Contribution
Which I’m sure you’ll agree pretty much covers every ‘celebrity’ industry you can think of.
So like all other award events of this type, the red carpet was full of celebrities strutting their stuff and showing of their style (or stylist’s style). Some of them showed up looking perfect, glamorous (very fitting considering the event) and fashionable, others not so much….
Here’s my list of the best and worst dressed celebrities at the GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards 2014
Alexa Chung rocked up to the Glamour Awards in this LBD with a twist. The oriental inspired, squared mesh/lace top of the dress is extremely sexy without being too in your face – especially the circle in the middle which draws your eyes to her cleavage and the hint of side boob (not something I’m usually fond of but it’s been done really well here). I’m not in love with the shoes but I think that’s only because her toes look quite sore. If I only had three words to describe this look I would say: sexy, strong, feminine!
So normally I think I’d hate this dress. Those of you who’ve read my lists before will have noticed that I normally go for a much cleaner, simpler aesthetic. Not only is this dress really busy but the panels with the white and red material reminds me of a kitchen towel (terry cloth). I don’t even love the shoes (especially with this dress)! So you might be asking why Alesha’s on my best dressed list … and the answer is I don’t really know. Something about this look, perhaps it’s soft but bright and summery colours against her skin. It could even be how stunning her hair and makeup are that’s pulling the rest of the look up for me.
Whatever it is though, Alesha Dixon really makes this dress look ‘WOW!’ to me!
I love how Katy B always manages to look young and fresh without having to strip half naked. Here she incorporates the floral trend bringing the essence of summer to the so far dismal May/June. She also manages to embrace both the transparent and crop top trends without going overboard. It’s not often you can have three trends in one outfit and still look like you’re not trying too hard.
Emma Willis managed to wear three very bright and obvious colours into her look without looking like she’d gone overboard. Emma teamed up a very bright yellow, white and green dress with a bright pink/fuchsia lipstick, and with wisps of her pulled back hair falling around her ears she looks very soft and feminine. More than that, she looks like sunshine and a summer day.
Laura Haddock showed up looking like bohemian flower child. When I first saw the dress I couldn’t decide whether it looked more like lingerie or a wedding dress but I thought about it a bit longer and decided that I didn’t care, she looks so care free and beautiful – who can knock that?
Again, if you’ve seen any of my previous best and worst dressed lists you’ll know that the decision to put Fearne Cotton on my worst dressed list is not something I would normally do. I love her style so much that normally she’s firmly in my best dressed section but this look is so terrible I couldn’t ignore it. Waist down she looks lovely but moving upwards she’s just made herself look so frumpy and old. Come on Fearne – I KNOW you can do better than this!!!
If you had asked me before today how a 54 year old woman (a beautiful one at that) could manage to look like a 5 year old girl playing dress up, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you… and then I saw this picture of Lorraine Kelly. NOTHING about this dress fits/looks right. The neckline is too high, the sleeves either not long enough or too long, the waist band too low and loose, the skirt too long and the shoes to sparkly. Even the colours look a bit ridiculous to me the silver white of the top and the shoes is too bright and doesn’t suit her skin tone and the skirt looks like a cheap curtain.
Normally when I look at pictures of Sharon Osbourne the last ting I would think is that ‘hey, here’s a woman who would perfectly suit a bohemian look’. Sharon’s such a tough, fierce woman with such a strong personality it’s actually fairly ridiculous that she’s trying to pull off this look – it’s just so not her! …. it is a pretty dress though.
Over the last few years Helen Mirren has turned into a bit of a fashion icon. But her stylist has done her wrong with this look. The sleeves and neckline of this dress actually look like they belong to another one altogether. If she’d have chosen one of them she’d have looked lovely. Also the shoes are just but ugly.
Oh my god! As a fabulous super, supermodel Naomi Campbell should have taken one look at this outfit and said no! The only thing good about this whole look is her hair and make up but other then words just escape me …
Do you think Eliza Doolittle say to her stylist, ‘I want to go to the GLAMOUR awards looking like a stripper who likes classic pieces of fashion mixed with futuristic designs. Oh and while you’re doing that, make sure it looks like the stripper went to the loo and got a whole roll of toilet paper stuck in her knickers’. If so her stylist does her job perfectly – Eliza give her a raise!
Ones I Want to Love But Can’t Quite …
I love everything about Paloma Faith and I actually think this look is stunning, unfortunately one thing ruins it for me…. the granny pants 🙁
I think this dress is lovely and very ambitious and daring and do you know what? I think Alex Jones would have pulled it off if it weren’t for four things.
1. The colour of the dress – I really think it needs to be either one shade more golden or one shade more yellow but this hybrid (while a lovely colour) doesn’t really suit Alex.
2. The colour of her lips and nails – I really don’t think the mix of fuchsia and red looks nice with this dress. Because the dress itself is so, so busy she should have kept the colours complimentary or the same.
3. The shoes – for me the gold shoes just do not work with this.
4. The hair – Alex’s hair looks so matronly here. I just wish she’d have scraped it all back and added a bit of edge to her look.
In this Dior Couture dress Daisy Lowe looks amazing! Head to toe (especially toe – those shoes are stunning!!) she looks beautiful and well put together. There is nothing about this look that I don’t like and she actually reminds me a lot of Dita Von Teese (anther stunning lady). But something about it just lacks personality – it’s like someone dressed a mannequin – if she’d put even a hint of effort into showing it a little bit I’d of added her to the best dressed list instantly.
Anyway that’s the end of my best and worst dressed list, what did you think?
Did you agree with my choices or would you add someone else? Let me know in the comments below.
